Ventricular extrasystoles (VES) are single ventricular pulses which are caused by a reentrant mechanism within the ventricle or by an abnormal automaticity of the ventricular myocardial cells. VES find very often both in healthy people and in people with heart disease. VES may be asymptomatic or cause palpitations. The diagnosis results from the ECG. Treatment is not usually required.

With frequent VES, v. a. at a Bigeminy may show up slight hemodynamic symptoms because the sinus rate is effectively halved. The ejection noise can be enhanced due to increased cardiac filling and increased contractility after the compensatory pause. Diagnostic ECG Diagnosis is from the ECG. Here, a wide QRS complex shows without previous P-wave. After that typically a full compensatory pause follows.
