Ulcerative Colitis

Under an ulcerative colitis refers to a chronic inflammatory and ulcerative disease of the colonic mucosa, most often characterized by bloody diarrhea. Extra-intestinal symptoms, v. a. Arthritis, also occur. The long-term risk of colon cancer is high. Diagnosis is colonoscopy. Treatment is with 5-aminosalicylic acid, corticosteroids, immunomodulators, biologics, antibiotics and sometimes surgical approaches. (See also Overview of inflammatory Darmerkrankheiten.)
