Subconjunctival hemorrhage extravasation of blood under the conjunctiva.

A subconjunctival hemorrhage (Hyposphagma) is usually due to a small local trauma, effort, sneezing or coughing. They spontaneously occurs rarely. Extent and location of hyperemia can help to determine the etiology. A diffuse hyperemia of the tarsal Bulbus- and is typical of conjunctivitis. Subconjunctival hemorrhage are indeed alarming for the patient, but pathologically no significance, except for a rare blood dyscrasias or facial or eye injuries. They are absorbed mostly within 2 weeks spontaneously. Therefore, the patient’s sedation is the best treatment. Local corticosteroids, antibiotics, vasoconstrictors or compresses can not speed up the absorption.
