The pinworm infestation is the most common worm infection in the United States. Pathophysiology The infection usually occurs by transfer of eggs from the perianal region on surfaces established (clothing, bedding, furniture, carpets, toys, toilet seat) of which the eggs resumed by the new host, to the mouth and swallowed. Thumb sucking is a risk factor. A reinfestation (Autoinfestation) comes easily into existence by a transport of eggs with fingers that have both contact with the perianal region and to the mouth. Pinworm infections were attributed to oro-anal sexual practices in adults. Pinworms reach sexual maturity within 2-6 weeks in the lower gastrointestinal tract. The female worm migrates from the anus to the perianal region (usually at night) to lay its eggs there. The sticky, gelatinous substance in which the eggs are laid, and the movements of the female worm cause perianal itching. The eggs can survive on surfaces for up to 3 weeks at normal room temperature. Life cycle of Enterobius.
