For most penile malignancies is squamous cell carcinoma. These usually occur in uncircumcised men in particular in poor local hygiene. The diagnosis is made by biopsy. Treatment involves the excision.

Human papillomavirus, v. a. types 16 and 18, play a role etiology. Premalignant lesions are the Erythroplasia Queyrat, Bowen disease and bowenoid papulosis. Erythroplasia of Queyrat (relates to the glans or inner prepuce), and Bowen’s disease (affecting the shaft) progress to an invasive carcinoma in 5-10% of cases; in bowenoid Papulose this does not seem to be the case. The three lesions have different clinical manifestations and biological effects that are histologically but really the same; reasonable they called intraepithelial neoplasia or carcinoma in situ.
