Some marine bites and stings are toxic (cnidarians (Cnidaria, like jellyfish and sea anemones), engravings of molluscs, sea urchins stitches, and stingray bites). All bites cause wounds at risk of infection with marine organisms such as Vibrio sp. and Aeromonas sp., and Mycobacterium marinum.

Bites by sharks cause jagged lacerations with subtotal or total amputation of a limb and should such severe trauma (handling trauma patients: evaluation and treatment) are treated.
