Otosclerosis is a disease of the bony labyrinth capsule with pathological accumulation of newly formed bone tissue in the oval window.

Since the bone newly formed tissue can clamp the stirrup (stapes) or restrict its mobility, it comes in otosclerosis to a conductive hearing loss. If Otoskleroseherde – as in the form of a rare Innenohrotosklerose – located near the scala media, a sensorineural hearing loss is possible. In half of the cases there is a hereditary form of otosclerosis. In patients with a corresponding genetic predisposition measles virus plays a role as a trigger.

Although about 10% of adult white (compared to 1% of African Americans and even less among blacks with primary African origin) population have a more or less strong otosclerosis, a conductive hearing loss develops only every 10 affected. Even if a otosklerotisch induced hearing loss early can manifest rare (with 7 or 8 years), it is recognized in most cases until the late Jugendlichen- or young adulthood and z. B. diagnosed due to a slowly progressive, asymmetric hearing loss. It is thought that during pregnancy can advance the fixation of the stapes. The hearing can be improved with a hearing aid. Instead, it may be useful to remove sections or the entire stapes by a Stapesektomie and with a prosthesis (stapes) to replace, but the risks of hearing loss and impaired vestibular function should be considered ..
