Measles

(Rubeola, measles; 9-day measles)

Measles is an extremely contagious viral infection that usually occurs in childhood. Symptoms include fever, cough, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, a Enanthem (Koplik Patch) on the labial mucosa, and a maculopapular rash propagating kephalokaudal. The diagnosis is made clinically in general. Treatment is supportive. Vaccination is highly effective.

Worldwide, there comes a year to about 20 million infections that cause about 200,000 deaths, especially in children. These numbers can vary greatly over a short period after vaccination of the population. Measles is rare in the US because of routine childhood vaccination; an average of 63 cases per year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports from 2000-2007. Since 2013, the cases in the US, however, have increased in record numbers, mainly due to imported cases with subsequent spread among unvaccinated groups.
