Loiasis

A loiasis is a filarial infections (overview of filarial infections) with Loa loa. The symptoms consist of a localized angioedema (Kalabarbeule) and a subconjunctival migration of adult worms. The diagnosis is made by the detection of microfilaria in peripheral blood, or by the observation of worms migrate along under the conjunctiva. Treatment is with diethylcarbamazine.

The loiasis is found only in the rain forest belt of western and central Africa. The only known reservoir for these parasites is the man.

Loa loa is transmitted through Tabanidenfliegen, (Chrysops, the deer or horsefly), which pierce the day. Microfilariae mature into adult worms in the subcutaneous tissue of the human host; the females are 40-70 mm and the males 30-34 mm long. The adults produce microfilariae. Adult worms migrate into the subcutaneous connective tissue and the eye, the microfilariae circulate in the blood. Flies are infected when they take daytime blood from a human host (if the microfilaremia levels are highest). Life cycle of Loa loa.
