The Keratomalacia is a corneal degeneration as a result of malnutrition.

The Keratomalacia caused by Vitamin A deficiency, which is typical in patients with proteinkalorischer malnutrition. Characteristic is a cloudy, dry cornea. A corneal ulceration with secondary infection is common. Lacrimal glands and conjunctiva are also affected. A lack of tears causes extreme dryness of the eyes, and on the temporal and frequently also on the nasal bulbar conjunctival foamy patches appear (Bitot-spots). Night blindness may occur.
