Fish Oil

Fish oil is packaged in capsules during consumption of fish, as a direct extract or concentrate. Active components are omega-3 (omega-3) fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]). Recently, yeast strains have been genetically developed which significant amounts of these oils can produce naturally and another source forum (1). Western diets are low in omega-3 fatty acids generally. (Other non-fish food sources of omega-3 fatty acids are walnuts and flax seed oil.)

Claims fish oil is used for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerotic heart / vascular disease, particularly by lowering triglyceride levels. It unknown mechanisms of action are probably several, previously held. Benefits for primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, to lower cholesterol, treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, lowering blood pressure and prevention of cyclosporine nephrotoxicity are suspected but not confirmed. Documents There is substantial evidence that EPA / DHA (EPA plus DHA in various combinations) can decrease in daily doses of 800-1500 mg the risk of heart attack and arrhythmia mortality in patients who are being treated for pre-existing coronary artery disease with conventional medicines (2 ). EPA / DHA reduced (dose-dependent) and triglycerides (eg. B.25-40% for EPA / DHA 4 g / day) and slightly lower blood pressure (2-4 mmHg at EPA / DHA> 3 g / day). Unpleasant side effects “fishy” belching, nausea and diarrhea may occur. By EPA / DHA daily doses> 3 g, the risk of bleeding increases. In laboratory tests, concerns have proven unfounded because of mercury contamination. Nevertheless, should not take omega-3 fatty acid supplements from fish pregnant or nursing women. The consumption of certain types and quantities of fish should be limited because of the potential risk of mercury contamination. Interactions with drugs fish oil in patients taking antihypertensive therapy is contraindicated because it can lower blood pressure more than it is physiologically desirable.
