Esophageal Carcinoma

The most common malignant tumor in the proximal two-thirds of the esophagus, the squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma is the most frequent in the distal third. The symptoms are increasing dysphagia and weight loss. The diagnosis is made by endoscopy, followed by CT and endoscopic ultrasound for staging. Treatment depends on the tumor stage and usually involves surgery with or without chemotherapy and radiation. The long-term survival is poor, except for patients with only local disease.
