Burkitt’S Lymphoma

(Burkitt’s lymphoma)

Burkitt’s lymphoma is a B-cell lymphoma that occurs primarily in children. A distinction is endemic (African), sporadic (non-African) and immunodeficiency-related forms.

Burkitt lymphoma is endemic in Central Africa and accounts for 30% of lymphomas in children in the United States. The endemic in Africa form often occurs as an enlargement of the jaw or facial bones. In sporadic (non-African) Burkitt’s lymphoma, the abdominal manifestation dominated, often in the region of the ileocecal valve or the mesentery. By the tumor may cause a bowel obstruction. Kidneys, ovaries or breasts may be affected as well. In adults, the disease can großknotig and generalized, often occur with massive participation of the liver, spleen and bone marrow. At diagnosis or recurrent lymphoma is often found a CNS involvement.

The pathology showing high mitotic rate, a monoclonal proliferation of B cells and a “starry sky” pattern of benign macrophages phagocytize the apoptotic malignant lymphocytes. There is a characteristic genetic translocation involving the C-myc gene on chromosome 8 and the immunoglobulin heavy chain on chromosome 14. The disease is closely associated with the endemic lymphoma with Epstein-Barr virus infection, but it is unclear whether the virus plays an etiologic role. Burkitt lymphomas often occur in patients with AIDS and can be an AIDS-defining illness. HIV-induced Burkitt’s lymphoma with permission of the publisher. From banks P., et al.
