Albinism

Oculocutaneous albinism caused a hereditary defect in melanin formation, the diffuse hypopigmentation of the skin, hair and eyes. Ocular albinism affects the eyes and usually not the skin. Eye involvement causes strabismus, nystagmus and reduced visual acuity. The diagnosis of albinism okulokutanem is usually obvious due to the skin condition, but an examination of the eyes is essential. Apart from the protection against sunlight, there are no treatments of skin lesions.

Pathophysiology Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is referred to a group of rare hereditary diseases in which, despite a normal number of melanocytes no or little melanin production takes place. OCA occurs in people of all races on all over the world. There are both cutaneous and ocular changes (ocular involvement). The findings on the ocular involvement include abnormal development of the optical tract, which manifest themselves in foveal hypoplasia with reduced photoreceptors and misdirection of optical fibers of the optic chiasm. Ocular albinism (OA) does not affect the skin usually. Albinism (cutaneous findings) Image courtesy of Noah S.
