Basics of Dental Anatomy

HentDental anatomy focuses on the oral cavity. The oral cavity is the first area of digestion, where food digestion begins. Humans have two sets of teeth during their lifetime.

These include the Universal Numbering System. The Palmer System and the International Numbering System. The most widely used system in the U.S is the Universal Numbering System (UNS). In the UNS, the permanent dentition is numbered from 1 til 32, starting from the upper right third molar and continue over to the upper left third molar and down to the lower left third molar and finally to the lower right third molar.

For Primary dentition, letters are used in the Universal Numbering System. Starting at the second molar on the upper to the upper left in the maxillary arch the letters are A-J. In the bottom Mandibular left the second molar to the right side the letters are K-T.
